Violence at Howe Community Park Results in Four Victims Wounded in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento
Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are working a gunfire incident that unfolded on the evening of April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento at the moment authorities were dissolving an unauthorized event of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Sacramento County law enforcement were first called to the park at about 6:30 PM after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Soon after, a second call came in describing a potential altercation unfolding within the park grounds.
An overhead unit searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Despite this, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had congregated at Howe Park in an unauthorized manner.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Responding units moved to clear the area by encircling the gathering and broadcasting over loudspeakers commanding the assembled crowd to clear out. Nearly 15 minutes were provided for the gathering to break up.
Just as the crowd began to move that between Home Depot Sacramento shooting 20 and 25 rounds were discharged. Gunfire caused mass panic. Deputies swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Four Victims Hospitalized
Ultimately, four individuals were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to area medical facilities. Emergency physicians reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. Thankfully, all four were expected to survive.
Sacramento Metro Fire also responded and helped care for the injured prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The bulk of the shooting was believed to have happened near Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Detectives recovered additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet damage were identified in the iron fence bordering the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries suggested that a shooter had been aiming south from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was placed on lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives kept processing evidence well into the night.
Suspects Detained
Reports confirmed through scanner monitoring revealed that a Kia had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Law enforcement units were sent to retrieve the detainees to collect the individuals for processing in Sacramento County. Video that was reviewed revealed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
